Toshiba Said to Increase Bond Sale to 110 Billion Yen

AM EST By Yusuke Miyazawa and Emi Urabe

(Updates with spokesman’s comment in third paragraph.)

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp. raised the size of a planned bond sale to 110 billion yen ($1.3 billion) from 80 billion yen, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The world’s second-largest maker of flash-memory chips told investors it plans to sell 70 billion yen of five-year bonds on Dec. 9 priced to yield 15 basis points more than the yen swap rate, said the person, asking not to be identified as the information is private.

The Tokyo-based company also plans to sell 25 billion yen of seven-year bonds at a 23 basis-point spread, and 15 billion yen of 10-year notes at a 30 basis-point spread, the person said. Proceeds will repay “loans and maturing commercial paper,” Toshiba spokesman Ken Shinjo said in a telephone interview today, declining to elaborate.

It will be the biggest debt sale by a Japanese manufacturer since Toshiba raised 120 billion yen in January, including 70 billion yen of 1.18 percent, four-year bonds priced at a 50 basis-point spread, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The company, whose products range from nuclear power plants to semiconductors and home appliances, has 98.5 billion yen of bonds maturing next year, the data show.

Sales of corporate bonds in Japan fell 17 percent to 9.025 trillion yen this year from the same period of 2009, Bloomberg data show, as companies cut spending. Machinery orders, an indicator of capital spending in three to six months, probably fell 0.1 percent in October after dropping 10.3 percent the previous month, according to a Bloomberg News survey of economists before a report due tomorrow.

Nomura Securities Co., Mizuho Securities Co. and Daiwa Securities Capital Markets Co. are helping Toshiba sell the bonds, according to a Nov. 19 e-mailed statement from Nomura.

Groupon Makes $800 Million in Annual Revenue, Not $2 Billion [EXCLUSIVE]

Groupon, which recently rejected a $5.3 billion offer from Google, does not have a $2 billion annual revenue run rate– a figure that’s been circulating a lot in the tech press lately. Rather, it has an $800 million annual gross revenue run rate.

Last week, AllThingsD reported that the group-buying website’s run rate is $2 billion per year, not the $500 million that was reported by other outlets around the time. The report came out at the same time as the news that the company had rejected Google’s offer.

According to a trusted source with firsthand knowledge of Groupon’s financials, “everyone is wrong” about the startup’s revenue numbers. The company’s actual run rate is $800 million in gross annual revenue, less than half the $2 billion being reported but still more than the $500 million figure that was floated around before the AllThingsD story.

Run rate is a tricky number, though. It’s a projection of what the company would make if you extrapolate from its most recent revenue numbers. Depending on the time frame used, the calculated annual run rate can vary significantly.

Still, when you think about it, $800 million in revenue makes more sense than an astonishing $2 billion. If the $2 billion number were indeed true, that would mean Google only offered to buy the company for 2.65 times greater than Groupon’s revenue, rather low for almost any acquisition, especially one by an established company like Google. An $800 million revenue rate results in a much more reasonable 6.6-times premium for the group-buying leader.

The Chicago-based company is probably no longer concerned with those numbers, though. It’s almost certainly looking to shatter both revenue numbers in 2011. With Google out of the picture, the company is free to swing for the fences and continue its unprecedented growth. Where it will stop is anybody’s guess.

Updated with more information on annual run rate.

Cyber Spending Hits $16.8 Billion for the Holidays (So Far) [eMoney]

/cyber-monday-to-be-followed-by-how-did-i-miss-that-19-9-percent-apr-tuesday/?mod=ATD_search">the heaviest online spending day on record at $1.028 billion.

On Tuesday, spending hit $911 million, making it the third heaviest day on record, and Wednesday and Thursday came in at $868 million and $850 million, respectively. These figures include both physical merchandise, and relatively new categories, like virtual goods.

The big winners in the past week have been the Amazon.com’s of the world and other large retailers, comScore noted.

The top 25 online retailers generated 20 percent more sales for the month of November, compared to last year, and their share increased to nearly 68 percent of the market. Meanwhile, the marketshare of small-to-mid-sized retailers shrunk to 32.2 percent.

These increases aren’t expected to last as some retailers became less aggressive with promotions and discounts toward the end of the week when -over-year growth rates fell to single digits. “We may see another week of this effect before late season discounts and buying by procrastinators gives the season a final spending surge,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
